What is Rudraksha ?

Rudraksha refers to the stone fruit whose dried stones are used as prayer beads by Hindus, especially Shaivites, as well as Buddhists and Sikhs. When they mature, Rudraksha stones are sometimes called “blueberry beads” because they are covered with an inedible blue outer fruit. Rudraksha stones are produced by several species of large broadleaf evergreen trees of the genus Eleocarpus, of which Eleocarpus ganitrus is the dominant species.
These stones are associated with the Hindu deity Shiva and are commonly used for protection and chanting mantras such as Om Namah Shivaya. The stones are mainly collected in India, Indonesia and Nepal for jewelry and malas (wreaths). They have the same value as semi-precious stones. Rudraksha stones have different meanings and interpretations with different “faces” or locules, and rare or unique stones are highly prized and valuable.

More Information

According to Shiva Purana, Rudraksha is said to have originated from the eyes of Lord Shiva in the form of tears that landed on earth near Kailash Mountain and formed the Rudraksha tree. This is why the Rudraksha tree grows mostly in the Himalayan regions of Nepal and India.

Rudraksha trees also grow in Myanmar, Indonesia (Sumatra and Java), Srilanka, the Philippines, Madagascar, etc.

However, different types of Rudraksha beads grow on the tree. They are based on the vertical lines seen running down on the surface. These lines are known as Mukhi, or in other words, “the clefts or furrows on the surface.” (For instance, if there are two vertical lines on the surface, then it is known as 2 Mukhi Rudraksha.)

Firstly, Searching for ways to increase their spiritual power and practices, India’s ancient masters were the first to discover Rudraksha, the extraordinary seeds hidden within the brilliant blue fruits of evergreen trees, growing in the volcanic earth of the sacred Himalaya mountains. Researching their miraculous spiritual powers, the masters strung the Rudraksha seeds together and realized that, by wearing them, the Rudraksha amplified, radiated and channeled peace, power and protection against negativity. They also found that Rudraksha provided many divine channels, reflected in their different ‘faces’, called Mukhis, which are seen on the surfaces of each bead.

Association with Shiva:

The Rudraksha absorbs sama (Sattva) waves. Similarly, sama waves are emitted by its crests. A real Rudraksha can be recognized by the vibrations felt upon holding it. At that time, the body absorbs the sama waves emitted by the Rudraksha. If a Rudraksha is held between the thumb and the ring finger, vibrations will be felt anywhere in the body. Even if kept nearby, the effect of a Rudraksha is felt up to half an hour. Thus, during that period we can perceive vibrations even if any other object is held with the fingers. However, if the hands are washed with water, the vibrations cannot be perceived.
