Lalita Sahasranama is said to have been composed by eight Vaj Devis at the behest of Lalita Devi. The Sahasranama says “One cannot worship Lalitha if he does not want to”. This sutra appears in the Brahmanda Purana in the chapter on the discussion between Hayagriva and Agastya Maharshi at Kanchipuram. Hayagriva is the horse-headed incarnation of Lord Vishnu and is considered the repository of wisdom. Agastya is one of the ancient sages and one of the stars in the Saptarishi constellation. However, At Agastya’s request, Hayagriva is said to have taught him thousands of sacred names of Lalita. Tirumeyachur temple near Kumbakonam is said to be the place where Agastya Sahasranama received initiation. Lastly, An alternative source is that the initiation took place in the Brahma Math Upanishad in Kancheepuram.
